The premise itself – a scientist contacted by a Soviet researcher claiming to hold the secret to immortality – is intriguing enough, but Zenner masterfully builds suspense from the very first page. The preface, I have to say, is a real gem; it sets the stage perfectly and left me pondering the possibilities of alternate history for quite some time.

Zenner's writing style is incredibly vivid. He paints such clear pictures with his words that I felt like I was right there alongside Dr. Hale, navigating the tense political climate and the even more tense scientific discoveries. The descriptions are detailed enough to be engaging without ever feeling bogged down; it's a testament to his skill as a storyteller.
